Hours, Appointments & Insurance Info:

Our office is open Mondays 8 am to 6 pm, Thursdays 8 am to 5 pm, and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays 8 am to 4 pm. We have a policy of saving work-in slots either on our nurse practitioners' or physicians' schedules on a daily basis, so that you can generally be seen same day for sick visits and urgent issues. New patients are accommodated based on availability.

We are currently on most PPO insurance plans including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Humana, and United - please check with your insurance to ensure that we are "in-network" on your particular plan. We also offer discounts for payment at time of service on both labs and visits for patients who are uninsured. We are not on most HMO plans or Medicaid. If you are on an insurance plan that is not listed feel free to call our office to ask, or you can look on your insurance website as well.

We are currently accepting new Medicare patients ages 65-75. Our office does Medicare billing differently from the typical practice, as we collect payment from our patients upon checkout. We then file the claim for our patient, and the patient will be reimbursed directly from Medicare. We still follow a Medicare-mandated fee schedule. We moved to this system several years ago and it has been a very smooth transition, although different from what you may have encountered before! After Hours/On Call

If you need to reach us after hours for an urgent matter that cannot wait until the next business day, you can call our regular office number and follow the instructions for paging the on-call physician.

Phone Calls/Phone Consults

While we realize that occasionally you may need to call our nurse for clarification of an issue or with a problem, once you have had two phone calls between visits it is our policy to ask you to come in and speak with the doctor or nurse practitioner regarding your concerns.

Hospitalizations

If for some reason you need to be admitted to the hospital, please call us or have the ER doctor call us. This allows us to stay involved in your hospital care and work with your hospital doctors. Due to the time constraints of our office practice, we generally do not manage our patients in the hospital. Instead we work with a team of "hospitalists" who will manage your care and stay in contact with us should you require hospitalization.

Can We Speak In Your Community?

Dr. Hausman-Cohen has recently been doing a series of health talks in the community. They have been extremely well-received, and people are talking! In one of her talks, "Nutrition for the Heart," Dr. Hausman-Cohen discussed how nutrition and food can be used to significantly improve cardiac and vascular health and decrease risk of cardiac events such as heart attacks and strokes. Information regarding new genetic tests that can help determine cardiac risk and guide changes was also discussed.

All of our providers enjoy helping patients and communities expand their medical knowledge. Dr. Hausman-Cohen enjoys "Educating Austin" and speaking in a large group setting. Dr. Weston and our nurse practitioners Laurelin Mullins and Charis Bearden prefer smaller groups. We are always happy to partner with community organizations, churches, or synagogues to offer these programs. If your organization is intestested in hosting a program, click here to email us.

Previous talks have included topics such as: specific disease states (e.g. hypothyroidism, osteoporosis, cardiac disease, and fibromyalgia), understanding lab values, Food as Medicine and Nutrition 101, and Vitamins and Minerals - Do They Make Sense or Waste Dollars?. We have also held talks focused on the science of natural or "alternative medicine" called Evidence-Based Medicine for Natural Treatments - Some of Our Favorites.

For smaller group discussions, more customized topics such as those relating to parenting or specific disases (asthma, diabetes, etc) may be arranged. Email us for more information if you are interested.

Texas VegFest a Success!

Cornucopia Health and Balcones Woods Family Medicine attended Texas VegFest on April 6th. Our booth was well-received, and we enjoyed meeting new people as well as visiting with established patients - thanks to everyone who came by to support us!

Cornucopia Health is a program which helps participants on their journey towards living a healthier lifestyle, working towards an ideal weight, and choosing and preparing nutrient-dense foods. At Balcones Woods Family Medicine, we are proud to have providers who are supportive of this lifestyle program. Over the years, our medical providers realized that they don't always have the time to teach the science or the practical skills needed for healthier cooking in office visits, and thus have been integrally involved in helping develop Cornucopia Health. We recommend this healthy-lifestyle program to our patients who want to lower their blood pressure, cholesterol and weight. Dr. Hausman-Cohen is the medical director of this program and teaches 3 hours of the curriculum. Click here to learn more about the Cornucopia Health program.
