Healthcare for the Whole Family
After working in a large group setting for four years, Dr. Hausman-Cohen opened Balcones Woods Family Medicine in 2001 to practice the "Art of Medicine."
Dr. Sharon Hausman-Cohen obtained both her Master's and Medical Degree from Harvard Medical School. She enjoys staying current in the medical field and spends a tremendous amount of time reading medical literature to keep the office up-to-date. Some of her favorite topics include nutrition, cardiac health, osteoporosis, mental health, and more. She also enjoys office orthopedics and musculoskeletal complaints, and endocrinology - including thyroid issues and stage of life hormonal changes.
Although dedicated to science and evidence-based medicine, Dr. Hausman-Cohen, like all of our providers, has a special emphasis on emotional and personalized needs for patients. She also has a strong interest in alternative and complementary medicine which she shares with the practice as a whole. She is the mother of 3 children in their teens and 20s.***Dr. Hausman-Cohen opened Resilient Health in July 2016. She is currently seeing Resilient Health concierge/private patients only, and only at the Resilient Health location. She remains the owner and medical director of both practices, and is dedicated to being a resource for all of our physicians and nurse practitioners. She continues to be integrally involved in the ongoing training of our BWFM providers, so that they can continue to offer an integrative approach within the constraints of our BWFM framework. Dr. Heselschwerdt was born and raised in Michigan. She attended college at the University of Michigan, earning her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and attended medical school at Wayne State School of Medicine in Detroit. She then decided to leave the north for the warmer climate of Texas, and recently completed her residency in Family Medicine at UT Austin. She served as chief resident for the 2014-15 academic year. She is happy to be staying in Austin upon finishing her residency.
Dr. Heselschwerdt's particular interests within family medicine include palliative care and mental health. She is passionate about humanism in health care as well as the practice of evidence based medicine. In her free time, she loves to bake cakes and macarons, root for U of M football, and play with her rescue dog. She also likes to write, and has taken an interest in narrative medicine.
Born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, Dr. Hochman attended college at the University of Texas where she met her husband. She obtained her medical degree from UTMB in Galveston and completed her residency in Denver, Colorado. While in Denver, she worked in various family practice settings as a covering physician and gained a wide variety of experiences. She recently moved back to Austin to be closer to family and the city she loves.
Dr. Hochman’s medical interests include helping patients manage chronic illnesses such as diabetes and high blood pressure and caring for patients with a history of cancer. She is also passionate about helping patients achieve optimal health, often incorporating lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise into patients’ treatment. Prior to entering family medicine she considered a career in surgery and enjoys performing in-office surgical procedures, especially related to dermatologic concerns.
When not in the office, Dr. Hochman enjoys gardening, reading, and hiking with her toddler. She also loves to travel and has been to every continent except Antarctica – which she has no plans to visit anytime soon!
Dr. Koren Weston obtained her Medical Degree from UTMB in Galveston in 1998, and completed her residency at the University of Florida in Gainesville. She is dual board-certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. She has extensive hospital and outpatient experience and worked as a hospitalist in South Austin for four years before joining our practice. Dr. Weston enjoyed the challenging diagnoses and critical care as a hospitalist, but is very happy to be back in the office - seeing patients and their families regularly to help them achieve optimal health.
Dr. Weston was excited to join our practice in 2009 due to the wide scope of care we provide. She is adept at coordinating care with specialists and other physicians as needed. Dr. Weston is known for her calm and caring demeanor as well as her listening skills. She has a particular affinity for both the very young and seniors, but enjoys caring for families and adults of all ages. She is a busy mother of four children.
Charis joined Balcones Woods Family Medicine in 2007. Prior to becoming a board-certified nurse practitioner, she enjoyed a varied 27 year nursing career with extensive experience in surgery and family medicine, and served six years as an Air Force nurse officer. In 2006, she received her Master of Science degree fom the University of Texas at Austin and became a nurse practitioner, graduating with highest honors.
Charis has tremendous medical skills and is known for her calm and understanding personality. She has an amazing ability to connect with people. Patients of all ages consistently report how comfortable they feel around her. She particularly enjoys working with adolescents and young adults, as she has two daughters in their 20s. She is also actively involved with our practice's wellness programs. Charis typically saves space on her schedule for urgent care and same-day visits, so many of our patients get a chance to meet her.
Laurelin joined our office in 2002. She has trained closely with Dr. Hausman-Cohen and is detail-oriented and thorough. Laurelin has a special interest in the treatment of chronic health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol. She loves seeing the "numbers drop" on lab follow-ups after a patient has made lifestyle changes or when a new medication is working well - her excitement is contagious.
Laurelin graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1997. She gained nursing experience in the nephrology/neurology unit at North Austin Medical center and in the pediatric emergency department at Brackenridge Hospital. In 2000 she returned to UT for her Master of Science in Nursing and certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner, receiving awards for academic excellence. She enjoys working with patients of all ages, and especially cherishes the rapport that develops over the years between patients and their providers in family medicine. She loves spending time with her husband and energetic son.
